Two dogs have been euthanised after a girl survived an attack south of Brisbane in which she was dragged into a yard before being mauled.

Emergency services rushed to Woodridge just before 4.30pm on Monday after the girl was injured.

The six-year-old girl, Laquarna Chapman Palmer, was taken to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a serious condition with chest, abdominal and shoulder injuries.

A Logan City Council spokeswoman said two unregistered Bull Arabs were seized.

“Today, in the interests of public safety, the two dogs were swiftly and humanely euthanised,” she said.

“Council is also committed to taking swift and effective enforcement measures, through a range of actions, particularly in instances where there is evidence of repeated or severe animal keeping failures, particularly those which impact public safety.”

“Logan City Council is committed to public safety through zero-tolerance of irresponsible animal ownership and high-risk animal behaviour.”

Laquarna’s uncle, Reece Chapman, suffered a leg injury while trying to rescue her.

He was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a stable condition, and needed 10 stitches.

The girl remains in hospital.

Chapman told Nine’s Today program Laquarna was playing on a divided fence when she was pulled down by one of the dogs.

“I just heard my mother screaming in panic,” he said.

“[I] just ended up jumping the fence and helping.

“One of the dogs there was going to attack her face and I threw the chair at the dog and tried chucking her over the fence and I ended up getting mauled by the dogs too.

“I thought she was dead because she was laying there lifeless.”

Acting Deputy Commissioner Mark Wheeler said police would continue to investigate the attack.

“My first impressions of what occurred – absolutely horrendous,” he said.

“We know that a dog, a particularly large dog, and a young child, we know that can be a really catastrophic outcome.

“Our thoughts are with the young girl, her family and her friends, and we wish her a speedy recovery.”

Logan City Council’s Animal Management team is continuing to investigate the dog attack.

clarification
